2025 HARVEST NOTES FROM MATT

2025 marks the earliest and shortest harvest I’ve seen in over twenty years of working with grapes in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. A warm season followed by late-summer heat accelerated ripening, bringing the fruit to maturity earlier than expected. Sugar levels and berry softness met all our hopes, and we began picking on September 9th—about a week and a half earlier than normal. By the first of October, nearly everything was in, which never happens!

This week, we’re welcoming our final pick: Riesling, our favorite late-ripening white. From here, it’s all downhill to the finish line. The quality of this year’s fruit is exceptional—the dry growing season delivered disease-free clusters and remarkably even ripeness.

Our crew is feeling the fatigue that comes with such an intense, compressed harvest, but spirits remain high thanks to taco-fueled lunches and a stretch of perfect autumn weather. We can’t wait for you to taste the 2025 vintage!

TO celebrate the end of harvest, we are throwing a party.

Come Over October: Harvest Celebration & Bubbly Release

Join us on Saturday, October 11th, from 2–6 pm as we celebrate the harvest season with the release of our newest sparkler: 2024 Pét Matt Rosé of Dolcetto!

We’ll be serving up paella (with a vegetarian option available) to pair with your glass of bubbles, and at 4 pm sharp, Matt will saber a bottle and lead us in a sparkling toast to the season.

No RSVP necessary—just swing by, raise a glass, and celebrate harvest with us!

Sept 27th - Spin the Bottle: Amiti Wines + Rebora Wines + Love & Squalor

We’re back with another edition of Spin the Bottle, our guest winemaker series that brings fresh voices and unique perspectives into the tasting room. On Saturday, September 27th, we’re thrilled to welcome Taylor Rebora of Rebora Wines and Rueben Lange of Amiti Wines—two exciting winemakers shaping the future of Oregon wine in very different, but equally compelling ways.

Meet Rueben Lange – Amiti Wines

After years of making wine for others across three continents, Rueben launched Amiti in 2022. The name, meaning “unique qualities a person possesses to do good in the world” in Hebrew, reflects his guiding principle: people and place are at the center of everything.

Rueben avoids traditional wine labels and descriptors, encouraging drinkers to meet his wines on their own terms. Beyond that, he’s farming vineyards in Canby and White Salmon—including one planted entirely to French-American hybrids, which he champions as a sustainable, overlooked future for the industry.

He’ll be pouring a stellar lineup:

2022 “Still in the Clouds” – Chenin, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne (Elkton AVA)
2023 “Flurries on the Riverbank” – Grenache (Columbia Gorge)
2024 “Melting Popsicles” – Leon Millot (Willamette Valley)

Meet Taylor Rebora – Rebora Wines

Taylor may only bottle a tiny amount of wine (170 cases!), but her approach is anything but small. With a degree in Wine & Viticulture from Cal Poly and vintages spanning California, New Zealand, South Africa, and Oregon, Taylor combines academic precision with the wisdom of mentors across the globe.

Her wines are about finding the best possible expression of each vineyard and vintage—without dogma, with intention. This year she’ll be sharing her 2023 Dolcetto, “Natura Morta,” from Jubilee Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills—a wine born of her time at Beckham Estate Vineyard and her belief in capturing fleeting moments of energy in every bottle.

Why You Should Join Us

These two winemakers represent everything Spin the Bottle is about—creativity, passion, and the joy of sharing wine stories outside the mainstream. You’ll have the rare chance to taste wines that are made in tiny quantities, driven by deep values, and infused with fresh energy.

From the Vineyards

Matt has been spending a lot of time out in our vineyards lately, and it’s a beautiful time of year to be there—even with the heat waves we’ve been riding through.

If you look at the clusters, you’ll notice a lot of variation in berry size. The French call this millerandage, but around here we call it “hens and chicks.” It’s a good thing: smaller berries mean more skin relative to juice, which gives the wines added complexity and concentration.

Hens & Chicks (Millerandage)

Since we’ve had a few questions about how heat affects grapes, here’s the scoop: when temperatures soar above 100°, the vines actually shut down to protect themselves. Below that threshold, heat can push ripening along—accelerating sugar and color development. With this in mind, we’re bracing for an earlier harvest than usual this year.

You may also notice a chalky look on some clusters—that’s sunscreen for grapes! Vineyard crews apply a thin layer of inert clay that reflects sunlight and keeps the fruit from getting sunburned. It comes off during fermentation and doesn’t affect fermentation or the finished wine.

Sunnyside Vineyard 55 year-old vine with new trunk development

Inert Clay on grapes at Gemini Vineyards

Back at the winery, we’re finishing up our last bottlings of the year and giving the cellar a good clean and tune-up. Harvest is right around the corner, and we’re excited to welcome back some of our veteran harvest crew.

Vineyard Highlights

  • Sunnyside Vineyard – Looking fantastic. Tom and Luci have been rejuvenating the Riesling block by training up new trunks to replace old ones that had lost steam. Sunnyside is always one of our later-ripening sites, and this year looks no different.

  • Gemini Vineyard – The new Gamay block is thriving, and we can’t wait to fold it into our Gamay program. We’ll also be getting a little Chardonnay from them this year—shhh, it’s our secret “Secret Chardonnay.”

Aurora Vineyard - Sauvignon Blanc

If you see us buzzing around the winery yard as harvest kicks off, don’t be shy—stop by and say hi. We’d love to show you what we’re working on.

SPIN THE BOTTLE: LAUREL RIDGE + PORTLAND WINE CO

Sat AUg 16th 2-6pm

We’re back with another edition of SPIN THE BOTTLE, our monthly guest winemaker series—and this time, we’re thrilled to welcome Laurel Ridge Winery!

Founded in 1986 and family-owned for nearly 40 years, Laurel Ridge is one of Oregon’s premier legacy wineries. Tucked into the rolling hills of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, their wines range from crisp, expressive sparklings to elegant Pinot Noirs, bold reds, and decadent dessert offerings. Each bottle tells the story of a family deeply committed to Oregon winemaking.

Today, Laurel Ridge is operated by second-generation owners Kira and Lucas, who split their time between vineyard work, winemaking, and wrangling preschoolers and barnyard animals (truly living the dream).

At this month’s tasting, you’ll sample a beautifully curated lineup, including:

  • 2020 Estate Heritage Cuvée – a harmonious blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Gris from Finn Hill Vineyard

  • 2021 Pinot Noir Cuvée – showcasing fruit from both Finn Hill and Menefee Vineyards

  • 2024 Sauvignon Blanc – vibrant and fresh, sourced from Quail Run Vineyards in the Rogue Valley

  • 2016 Single Vineyard Reserve Pinot Noir – aged to perfection, from the esteemed Finnigan Hill Vineyard

  • 2019 Tempranillo – a bold Southern Oregon red with deep character and spice

July 12 - Spin the Bottle: Mellen Meyer

Get ready to pop some serious corks! On Saturday, July 12th, we're thrilled to welcome Bobby Rowett of Mellen Meyer for an effervescent afternoon exploring the "phenomenology of wine through sparkling expression."

Founded in 2013, Mellen Meyer makes exclusively traditional method sparkling wines. Using only Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay from carefully selected cool-climate, dry-farmed Willamette Valley sites, Bobby crafts bubbles that are both thoughtful and unmistakably Oregon.

Tasting lineup:

  • 2018 Willamette Valley Brut (Pinot Noir & Chardonnay)

  • 2017 Blanc de Noir (Pinot Noir from Ribbon Ridge)

  • 2018 Rosé 777 (Pinot Noir from the Van Duzer Corridor)

  • 2016 Blanc de Blanc (Chardonnay from the Van Duzer Corridor)

POUR SOME LOVE: a blending event

POUR SOME LOVE — A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Our Flagship Pinot

Ever wonder how a wine goes from barrel to bottle — and what choices shape its final character? We think it’s one of the most fascinating parts of winemaking, and we’re inviting you to experience it with us at POUR SOME LOVE, our special Pinot Noir blending trial.

On Thursday, July 31st, from 6–9 PM at the winery bar, we’re opening up our cellar, our notebooks, and our palates for a hands-on look at how we craft our Love & Squalor Willamette Valley Pinot Noir — the wine that started it all for us.

So, what happens at a blending trial?

Each year, once all the separate Pinot Noir lots have been aging in barrel, our winemaker Matt (with plenty of help from Alana, our assistant winemaker and Jess Kate the tasting room wrangler) tastes through every single barrel, takes notes, argues with himself, and tries to figure out what the best possible version of that vintage should be. Should it be brighter? A little more savory? Should we add a splash from that tiny block on the hill? Which barrels stand out — and which should we hold for our single vineyard bottlings?

At POUR SOME LOVE, you’ll get to sit at the blending table with us. We’ll pour you samples of different Pinot Noir lots — all from the same 2024 vintage — and show you how small blending decisions make a big difference in the final wine. You’ll get to compare your trial blend with our current single vineyard Pinots and our other Pinot Noir tiers, tasting how site, barrel, and winemaker choices all come together in the bottle.

We’ll talk through our favorite vineyards, share what makes each one unique, and answer all the questions you might have about Oregon Pinot and the behind-the-scenes reality of blending wine.

What’s included?

  • Your ticket ($45 general public, $25 for our wine club members) gets you:

  • A seat at the blending trial with lots of Pinot to taste

  • A tasting of our other Pinot tiers & single vineyard wines

  • Time to chat directly with Matt, Alana, and Jess (our tasting room manager who knows our wines inside and out)

  • Light snacks to keep you steady

  • A little notebook to capture your tasting notes

  • A $5 coupon toward your future purchase of the 2024 Love & Squalor Pinot Noir once it’s bottled

  • 10% off any bottles you buy that night (or 20% if you’re a club member — a nice perk for our loyal folks!)

Why we love doing this

This is honestly one of our favorite things to share with our community. Blending isn’t fancy — it’s thoughtful, messy, delicious work that captures what we love most about making wine in the Willamette Valley: nuance, place, and that bit of chaos that keeps it interesting.

So if you’ve ever wondered how a wine like our flagship Pinot Noir comes to life, we’d love to have you at the table. Bring your curiosity (and maybe a friend), roll up your sleeves, and taste your way through the 2024 vintage with us.

Tickets are limited to just 20 people, so grab yours soon if you want in. We promise good wine, good company, and some good nerdy Pinot talk.

We can’t wait to pour some love with you this summer.

Game, Set, Gamay: We're in the Willamette Valley's Top 10!

The praise for our 2022 Willamette Valley Gamay Noir keeps rolling in! (Ok, we admit it — there’s nothing humble about this brag.)

Not only did it get 95 points from Wine Enthusiast, 93 points from both James Suckling and the NW Wine Report, and 91 points from Paul Gregutt, but VinePair just named it one of the top 10 Gamay Noirs from the Willamette Valley!

Here’s what they had to say:

This one has the “grapey” quality that comes from carbonic maceration, softening the flavors of blueberry, black cherry, and dried cranberry. But there’s lively acidity, and hints of vanilla, powdered cinnamon, and white pepper make it all the more interesting.

This wine has long been a favorite at the winery bar, and now that the critics have caught on, it’s selling fast! Get yours before it’s gone.

June 14th Spin the Bottle: Mike Hinds of Franchere

Ever wonder what happens when winemakers come together to share their passions, their bottles, and a touch of magic? That’s the essence of Spin the Bottle, our ongoing guest winemaker series at Portland Wine Co., where we welcome friends from the industry to showcase their wines and the stories behind them through intimate, curated tastings and special gatherings.

The series is back—and this time, we’re delighted to welcome Mike Hinds of Franchere Wine Company as our featured guest.

Mike Hinds has been making adventurous, balanced, thoughtfully crafted wines under the Franchere label since 2013.  He ferments his wines solely with native yeasts and without temperature controlled tanks, filtration, weird enological products, or fancy machines. And while Mike loves grapes in the Pinot family, he also works with Grüner Veltliner, Blaufränkisch, Ehrenfelser, and Kerner, and other varieties that are less commonly grown in the Willamette Valley.

Join us at Portland Wine Company on Saturday, June 14th, from 2-6 pm, to taste Mike’s unique and delicious creations:

  • 2023 Grüner Veltliner

  • 2023 Lionesses (Ehrenfelser, Kerner blend)

  • 2023 Fast Hearts (White blend)

  • 2023 Failed Empires (Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt)

  • 2022 Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir

This event is free! Bring a friend and a sense of adventure, and come chat with Mike about all things winemaking.

Share & Pair - May 22-25 Featuring 2021 Pinot Noir Reserved

"Share & Pair Sundays" is a campaign encouraging people to gather on Sundays to enjoy wine, food, and friends. At Portland Wine Company, we’re proud to participate in this initiative by pairing wine, food, and some of our favorite things to do in our beautiful city!

This is the final week to come enjoy a ½ glass of our featured wine and a snack for just $12.

Share & Pair for Thursday, may 22 - Sunday, may 25

The Wine: 2021 Love & Squalor Pinot Noir Reserved

This limited 102-case bottling is a blended barrel selection from Temperance Hill Vineyard in Eola-Amity AVA, Arlyn Vineyard in the Chehelam AVA and Gemini Vineyard in the Laurelwood District.

Paul Gregutt gave this wine 92 points! Here’s what he had to say:

“Held back prior to release, this is the newest and latest Reserved from Love & Squalor. Four barrels are selected for the blend, yielding a wine with a darker profile of black fruits touched with highlights of charred wood. At the core is a generous serving of black cherry fruit, balanced against proportionate acids and ripe tannins. Tasted with the winery’s regular Pinot (from 2022), this is the bigger and darker wine, a wine I’d drink over the next half decade.”

Paired Snack: Truffle Potato Chips

Once again, we sampled scores of gourmet potato chips to determine exactly the right one for this complex Pinot Noir. The umami-rich potato chips brighten the black cherry fruit flavors, while the wine’s ripe tannins provide just enough structure to complement the potato chips' satisfying crunch.

Winery Bar Food Special: Mushroom Crostini

The pairing of Oregon Pinot Noir and mushrooms prove that “what grows together, goes together.” The same soils that nurture Pinot Noir also give rise to the most flavorful mushrooms. Together, they create a combination that just feels right with each sip and bite.

A Pairing to Share at Home: Roast Chicken with Mushroom Risotto

This classic pairing has stood the test of time and is the perfect showcase for Oregon Pinot’s elegant complexity. The roasted chicken finds a perfect companion in the wine's subtle tannins, while the creamy risotto is balanced by its vibrant acidity.

If you have time, you can roast a whole chicken and serve risotto on the side, but for an easier whenever meal, get a pre-roasted chicken and try this easy recipe:

Activity Pairing: HAVE DINNER AT PORTLAND WINE COMPANY

Share & Pair for Thursday, may 15 - Sunday, may 18

The Wine: 2023 Love & Squalor Chardonnay [New Release!]

Our very first Chardonnay is a love letter to Oregon’s cool-climate winemaking style—flinty, fresh, and just the right amount of wild. Fermented with native yeast and aged in neutral oak, it shows off bright white peach, lemon zest, and a whisper of wet stone. Medium acidity keeps it lively, but never sharp. Aged in barrel and stainless for balance and texture, this one’s all about quiet elegance and a clean finish. Come taste it before it disappears!

Paired Snack: Charred Scallion Dip

Our inaugural Chardonnay is the perfect match for the bold, smoky flavor of charred scallion dip. The wine’s bright fruit notes complement the dip's deep, caramelized flavors, while a whisper of wet stone provides a mineral counterpoint to the scallions' charred intensity.

Winery Bar Food Special: Pierogi Muffins

A recent culinary experiment turned us on to the deliciousness pierogi casserole (see below), which this week we’re featuring in muffin form. The casserole is layered with mashed potatoes, bacon, caramelized onions, and cheese. The wine cuts through the richness like a knife, creating an explosion of flavor while also cleansing the palate between bites.

A Pairing to Share at Home: Pierogi Casserole

When you don’t have time to roll out dumplings, this pierogi casserole is the bomb. Pro tip: Double the bacon and onions.

Share & Pair for Thursday, may 8 - Sunday, may 11

The Wine: 2024 Love & Squalor Pinot Gris [New Release!]

This week’s Share & Pair is a special one — not just because it’s Mother’s Day weekend, but also because it’s a new release! Our 2024 Pinot Gris was sourced from the Dion Vineyard in the Laurelwood District. Made by a Riesling lover, the 2024 vintage is bold with stony minerality, deep fruit flavors, and a long finish.

Paired Snack: Goat Cheese with Rosemary Crackers

Our Pinot Gris finds its soulmate in goat cheese. The wine’s mineral backbone mirrors the tanginess of the cheese, and the concentrated stone fruit balances the cheese’s acidity.

Winery Bar Food Special: Shrimp Cocktail

Treat your mom to a coastal dining experience right here in Portland with the classic pairing of Pinot Gris and seafood. Here, the wine’s fruitiness complements the shrimp’s brininess, while the acidity refreshes the palate between mouthfuls of cocktail sauce.

A Pairing to Share at Home: Pan-Seared Halibut with Lemon Butter Sauce

It’s fresh halibut season (which may or may not be part of the reason we’re featuring Pinot Gris). And when it comes to fresh halibut, simplicity is the key to bringing out the delicate flavors. This recipe is fast, easy, and delicious:

Activity Pairing: EXPLORE FOPO

Share & Pair for Thursday, may 1 - Sunday, may 4

The Wine: 2022 Sparkling Rosé of Cabernet Franc

Spring is here, the sun is out, and that puts us in the mood for bubbles! (Oh, who are we kidding? We’re always in the mood for bubbles!)

Our Sparkling Rosé of Cabernet Franc is full of red fruit flavor, with peaches and cream silkiness, and of course plenty of bubbles that make every glass feel like a celebration. This wine is only available in the winery bar, so if you haven’t tried it yet, this is your chance!

"This pink-hued pét-nat with brash acidity is more fun than we deserve. Crushed strawberries and sunflowers paint an aromatic picture, made even more irresistible by thyme and rose petals. Flavors of candied nectarines, saline, and juniper berries rub up against a chalky texture. Hidden gem." (91 points) - Michael Alberty Wine Enthusiast

Paired Snack: Mini Peppers Stuff with Goat Cheese

The sweet-savory balance of stuffed mini peppers mirrors those same qualities in our sparkling Cab Franc Rosé. Plus, the bubbles cut through the rich goat cheese, cleansing your palate after every bite.

Winery Bar Food Special: Harissa Hummus

Harissa hummus has become a mainstay in the winery bar because it goes well with our bright, acid-driven wines. For this pairing in particular, the spicy-tanginess of the harissa brings out the wine’s touch of natural sweetness.

A Pairing to Share at Home: Chili

Cabernet Franc is an ideal pairing for chili because it enhances the spices without amplifying the heat. With our sparkling Cab Franc Rosé, that effect is magnified, while emphasizing the wine’s bold fruit flavor.

Use this recipe as a base and then add your own flair:

  • The Ultimate Chili — Suggested additions: cocoa powder, espresso, pickled jalapenos, dried ancho chilies, sweet corn, bacon

Activity Pairing: Hang out in Montevilla

Montevilla is one of our favorite Portland neighborhoods for strolling, eating, and shopping. Check out this video for a quick look at some of the fun Montevilla has to offer. When you go, be sure to stop by the Monticello Antique Marketplace, but beware — you can easily lose several hours in there!

The first Friday of May is International Sauvignon Blanc Day, and we’re kicking of the festivities early! The Love & Squalor 2023 Sauvignon Blanc is already a best-seller because it’s a perfect balance of acid and fruit. Think juicy citrus (especially Meyer lemon) and just a touch of white Haribo gummy bear.

Paired Snack: Parmesan Garlic Potato Chips

Our staff diligently tasted a variety of potato chips (it was tough work!) to bring you this easy peasy perfect pairing. It’s bright and flavorful and the salty, savory chips bring out the wine’s Haribo gummy bear.

Winery Bar Food Special: Whipped Feta

Our whipped feta is a winery bar favorite because it goes well with every wine we’ve tried it with so far! But it’s particularly scrumptious with the bright acidity, citrus, and stone fruit notes in our 2023 Sauvignon Blanc.

A Pairing to Share at Home: Pasta Primavera

The PSU Farmers Market is officially open! So load up on fresh spring vegetables, invite loved ones over, and make a big bowl of pasta primavera.

Here is an easy, delicious recipe that you can make any night of the week:

  • Pasta PrimaveraPro tip: Before you add the broth in Step 3, add 1/2 cup of the Sauvignon Blanc and boil it down. Then add the broth and continue with the recipe.
