POUR SOME LOVE IS BACK — AND THIS TIME, IT'S ALL ABOUT GAMAY

Last summer, we opened up the cellar and invited a small group of wine lovers to step behind the curtain of our Love & Squalor Pinot Noir. You tasted through vineyard tiers, debated blending ratios with Matt and Alana, and went home with notebooks full of scribbled percentages and strong opinions. It was one of our favorite nights of the year.

So we're doing it again — and this time, we're turning our attention to Gamay Noir.

POUR SOME LOVE: Blending Event with Matt, Alana & Jess June 25th | 6–8 PM
$45 General | $25 Club Members | Limited to 20 People

Gamay is a grape that rewards experimentation. It's expressive, layered, and surprisingly versatile — and we've been working with several different barrels this vintage that each tell a slightly different story. On June 25th, we will walk you through a tasting of our barrelled Gamay Noirs, starting with finished wines so you have a reference point, then diving into the barrel samples themselves.

From there, it's your turn. You'll play with different blending combinations, see how small shifts in proportion change the texture, fruit, and structure of a wine, and land on a blend that's entirely your own creation. Whether you've always wondered how wines come together or just want a fun night with a glass in hand, this is your chance to make something uniquely your own.

No experience necessary — just curiosity and a willingness to get a little nerdy about what's in your glass.

What's Included:

  • Tastings of finished wines and barrel samples

  • Light snacks

  • 10% off bottles on the night

  • A $5 coupon toward your future 2025 L&S Gamay Noir purchase

This event is intentionally small and hands-on — the kind of evening where you leave knowing a lot more about how wine is actually made, and maybe with a new favorite grape.

We can't wait to share these barrels with you.

WHAT IS TRASHY BOOKCLUB?

Welcome to Trashy Book Club: Wine, Romance, and Absolutely No Apologies

Some book clubs serve tea and discuss literary symbolism. Ours serves wine and debates which fictional love interest would actually ruin your life in the best possible way. Welcome to Trashy Book Club — and yes, we own that name proudly.

So, What Exactly Is Trashy Book Club?

Every other month, on the third Thursday, a wonderfully unhinged group of readers gathers to drink good wine, talk about deliciously over-the-top books, and — as it turns out — make some really great friends. We meet from 5:30 to 7pm, and if you're running a little late from work, don't worry. We talk a lot. You won't miss a thing.

Best of all? It's completely free to join, and no RSVP needed. Just show up.

The twist that makes our book club a little different from the rest? You're not just drinking wine in someone's living room — you're at a winery, with snacks, and either our owner or our assistant winemaker is right there in the room with you. Order whatever sounds good to you, or try our weekly flight, which changes regularly. If you have questions about what you're drinking, we love talking wine — just ask. But we're not going to turn book night into a lecture. This is your evening. We're just happy you're here.

How It All Started

Our very first meeting was led by Alana, our assistant winemaker, and it set the tone perfectly. The book was A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas — a fantasy romance that follows nineteen-year-old Feyre into a dangerous, gorgeous world of fae, forbidden feelings, and enough tension to fill several wine glasses. Maas is a #1 New York Times bestselling author whose romantasy books have sold over 75 million copies worldwide, so we were in excellent company.

The discussion was electric. People had feelings. Strong feelings. About Tamlin. About Rhysand. About the choices Feyre makes and what they say about love and survival and power. The wine flowed, the opinions flew, and by the end of the night we unanimously decided: we needed Book 2.

The Great Book 2 Problem (And What We Learned From It)

Here's where it gets funny. So many people who came to that first meeting had already read the entire ACOTAR series. When we announced we'd be reading A Court of Mist and Fury — where things get even more complicated, more swoony, and frankly more unhinged — a lot of those folks had to sit out. When you've already devoured all five books, it's hard to pretend you don't know what's coming.

Our second meeting, led by the fabulous Angie, was still an absolute blast for those of us catching up. ACOMAF is widely considered one of the best books in the series, and once you read it, you understand why people lose their minds over it. Spoiler: the group that attended loved it so much they finished the rest of the series immediately.

Which brought us to a very important group decision: we're not doing that again. From now on, we explore a new series every two meetings — one book at a time, so everyone comes in fresh.

What We're Reading Now: Blood and Ash

Our current read is From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout, the first book in the Blood and Ash series — and oh boy, is it delivering. We are here for every single page of it.

What do we love? The slow burn that somehow still feels like it's on fire. The way the romance builds between characters who probably shouldn't want each other but absolutely, desperately do. The push and pull, the tension, the moments where you have to put the book down and collect yourself. We love a heroine who has backbone, a love interest with secrets a mile long, and a world with just enough danger to make every tender moment feel earned.

It's the kind of book you read with snacks, a blanket, and absolutely no responsibilities the next morning.

Coming Up: The Song of Achilles

For our August meeting, we're shifting gears in the best possible way. We'll be reading The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller — a gorgeous, devastating retelling of the Trojan War told through the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus. It won the Orange Prize for Fiction and has been breaking hearts since 2011. If you thought we were only here for fae romance, think again. We're here for all the romance — epic, mythological, and soul-crushing included.

More Than Just Books

One thing we didn't expect when we started this? How many people have walked in not knowing a soul and walked out with new friends. We've had quite a few folks who are new to town find their way to Trashy Book Club, and it's been genuinely wonderful to watch the group grow and connect over shared opinions on fictional men and very real wine.

That's the magic of it, really. The books give you something to talk about. The wine loosens everyone up. And before you know it, you're making plans to grab dinner before the next meeting.

Join Us

Next meeting: Thursday, June 18th, 5:30–7 pm Book: From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

After that: Thursday, August 20th, 5:30–7 pm Book: The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

Come as you are. Come a little late if work runs long. Bring your opinions, your theories, your grievances about fictional characters, and your appetite for a good pour. We'll handle the rest.

Trashy Book Club. No shame. All the feels. Always a good time.

Spin the Bottle: Loop de Loop Takes the Pour

Friday, April 24th | 5–8 PM | Portland Wine Company

If you’ve been to one of our Spin the Bottle nights, you already know the deal: we clear a little space in the tasting room, invite a winemaker we love (or have loved for a long time), and let things unfold. It’s casual, it’s a little chaotic, and it’s always delicious. No tickets, no RSVP—just good wine, good people, and a chance to connect with the humans behind the bottles.

For our next installment, we’re especially excited to welcome Julia Bailey Gulstine and Scott Gulstine from Loop de Loop Winery into the mix.

Julia’s not just any guest—she goes way back with Angie & Matt, which makes this one feel a bit like a reunion tour (the kind where everyone actually still likes each other). And if you haven’t had the chance to taste her wines yet, this is your moment.

Loop de Loop is rooted up on Underwood Mountain, an extinct volcano perched at the edge of the Cascades. It’s the kind of place that quietly does all the work for you—elevation, wind, and ancient volcanic soils shaping fruit with serious personality. The vineyard, Light Anthology, sits high (1,250–1,400 feet) on a steep southeast-facing slope, farmed organically with regenerative practices that let the ecosystem do its thing.

And the wines? They follow that same philosophy.

These are vintage-born, place-driven wines—fermented with native yeasts, often aged patiently on lees, and bottled without fining or filtration. Nothing rushed, nothing overworked. Julia’s approach leans more shepherd than scientist, letting each wine find its own rhythm rather than forcing it into a mold.

What that means in the glass is something pretty special: wines that feel alive. Bright, structured, a little wild around the edges—in the best possible way. Expect mineral-driven textures, aromatic layers, and that subtle, almost salty edge that hints at the mountain’s ancient past.

In short: these are not your “play-it-safe” wines. They’re thoughtful, expressive, and just off the beaten path enough to keep things interesting.

So come by, grab a glass, and hang out with us. Taste something new, ask Julia all your winemaking questions (or none at all), and settle into the beautifully unpredictable energy that makes Spin the Bottle what it is.

Free tasting. No RSVP. Just show up.

Spin the Bottle: J.K. Carriere

This Saturday (Dec 6th), we’re excited to welcome Jim Prosser of J.K. Carriere to Spin the Bottle—a winemaker whose story is as layered and compelling as the wines he crafts. And for us, it’s extra special: Jim has been a friend of Matt’s for more than 20 years, and one of his guiding lights in winemaking. Having him in our space feels a bit like bringing family home.

The legend starts with a big face on a label, the contraction of two grandfathers’ names (J.K. Prosser & Paul Carriere), an insect that can kill you, and a couple of decades chasing authenticity. Jim came back to Oregon in 1999—post finance, post dress-for-success, post “crazy-shit-out-on-the-world”—after stints with Pinot producers in Oregon, New Zealand, Australia, and France. J.K. Carriere was his best guess at a recognizable life, and he built it from the ground up: just him, a handful of grapes, a 100-year-old barn, and a whole lot of MacGyvering.

As the “pure wine” accolades rolled in and the late nights and ramen got old, “me” turned into “we.” By 2007, Jim and his team had willed themselves into 40 acres of untouched hilltop. A year later came a purpose-built winery grounded in beauty and simple physics. In 2009 they began planting St. Dolores Estate—named for Jim’s mother—and by their 20th anniversary they were farming 38,000 vines across 26 acres.

Two decades in, that same hilltop continues to insist on the truth: great wine starts with great dirt. Jim’s philosophy follows suit—no shortcuts, just intimate knowledge of the land, natural farming, and thoughtful winemaking that lets the vineyard speak for itself. The result? Acid-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with substance, soul, and a clear sense of place.

Come meet Jim, hear the stories, and taste the work of someone who has helped shape Oregon wine—and who we love hanging out with.

Saturday, December 6th | 2–6 pm | Free tasting!

Spin the Bottle: FlipTurn Cellars

Join us on Saturday, November 22nd, as we welcome Meg Rulli of Flipturn Cellars as part of our Spin the Bottle guest winemaker series.

Flipturn celebrates the unexpected flips and turns in life. Meg fell in love with wine during her college study abroad in Barcelona, where she discovered the joy of pairing wine with food. That spark grew stronger years later after moving to Oregon, where she found herself surrounded by the remarkable wine regions of the Pacific Northwest.

In 2019, Meg earned her WSET Level 3 Certification, deepening her fascination with the grape-to-glass transformation. The following year, she took a bold leap — purchasing one ton of Syrah from Washington’s Yakima Valley without any prior winemaking experience. Through hands-on learning and mentorship from talented Oregon winemakers, she crafted her first vintage and launched Flipturn Cellars in 2022.

Flipturn Cellars sources grapes from vineyards practicing regenerative farming to produce small-batch, minimal-intervention, food-friendly wines. You may have seen Meg out in the Willamette Valley over the years as a featured winery at the semi-annual Indie Wine Mixer, where she continues to champion community among Oregon’s small producers.

When she’s not in the cellar, Meg runs Barrel Dork — a weekly newsletter and online platform where she shares approachable wine education and courses designed for everyday wine lovers.

Stop by the winery bar from 2-6 pm to taste Meg’s latest creations:

  • 2024 Trio White Blend (Viognier, Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris), Willamette Valley + Rogue Valley

  • 2023 Old Vine Dry Riesling, Columbia Gorge (OR)

  • 2023 Rustic Sangiovese, The Rocks District, Walla Walla

As always, Spin the Bottle tastings are free!

SPIN THE BOTTLE: APPROACHMENT + PWCo

On Saturday, Oct 25th, from 2-6pm, we’re thrilled to welcome Approachment Wine Company as our next Spin the Bottle guest! Founded by Jessica and Paden West, Approachment is their shared outlet for creativity, precision, and plenty of experimentation—while staying true to their roots as longtime Willamette Valley winemakers. Their wines are vibrant and energetic, from a crisp, refreshing 2024 Pinot Gris and elegant 2023 Pinot Noir (both from Benza Vineyard in the Laurelwood District) to bold, expressive Rhône varietals like Grenache and Syrah from Walla Walla’s famed Les Collines Vineyard. Approachment is about crafting wines that are approachable, full of character, and always fun to drink. Join us in the tasting room and see why this duo’s passion shines through in every bottle.

Sept 27th - Spin the Bottle: Amiti Wines + Rebora Wines + Love & Squalor

We’re back with another edition of Spin the Bottle, our guest winemaker series that brings fresh voices and unique perspectives into the tasting room. On Saturday, September 27th, we’re thrilled to welcome Taylor Rebora of Rebora Wines and Rueben Lange of Amiti Wines—two exciting winemakers shaping the future of Oregon wine in very different, but equally compelling ways.

Meet Rueben Lange – Amiti Wines

After years of making wine for others across three continents, Rueben launched Amiti in 2022. The name, meaning “unique qualities a person possesses to do good in the world” in Hebrew, reflects his guiding principle: people and place are at the center of everything.

Rueben avoids traditional wine labels and descriptors, encouraging drinkers to meet his wines on their own terms. Beyond that, he’s farming vineyards in Canby and White Salmon—including one planted entirely to French-American hybrids, which he champions as a sustainable, overlooked future for the industry.

He’ll be pouring a stellar lineup:

2022 “Still in the Clouds” – Chenin, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Melon de Bourgogne (Elkton AVA)
2023 “Flurries on the Riverbank” – Grenache (Columbia Gorge)
2024 “Melting Popsicles” – Leon Millot (Willamette Valley)

Meet Taylor Rebora – Rebora Wines

Taylor may only bottle a tiny amount of wine (170 cases!), but her approach is anything but small. With a degree in Wine & Viticulture from Cal Poly and vintages spanning California, New Zealand, South Africa, and Oregon, Taylor combines academic precision with the wisdom of mentors across the globe.

Her wines are about finding the best possible expression of each vineyard and vintage—without dogma, with intention. This year she’ll be sharing her 2023 Dolcetto, “Natura Morta,” from Jubilee Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills—a wine born of her time at Beckham Estate Vineyard and her belief in capturing fleeting moments of energy in every bottle.

Why You Should Join Us

These two winemakers represent everything Spin the Bottle is about—creativity, passion, and the joy of sharing wine stories outside the mainstream. You’ll have the rare chance to taste wines that are made in tiny quantities, driven by deep values, and infused with fresh energy.

SPIN THE BOTTLE: LAUREL RIDGE + PORTLAND WINE CO

Sat AUg 16th 2-6pm

We’re back with another edition of SPIN THE BOTTLE, our monthly guest winemaker series—and this time, we’re thrilled to welcome Laurel Ridge Winery!

Founded in 1986 and family-owned for nearly 40 years, Laurel Ridge is one of Oregon’s premier legacy wineries. Tucked into the rolling hills of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, their wines range from crisp, expressive sparklings to elegant Pinot Noirs, bold reds, and decadent dessert offerings. Each bottle tells the story of a family deeply committed to Oregon winemaking.

Today, Laurel Ridge is operated by second-generation owners Kira and Lucas, who split their time between vineyard work, winemaking, and wrangling preschoolers and barnyard animals (truly living the dream).

At this month’s tasting, you’ll sample a beautifully curated lineup, including:

  • 2020 Estate Heritage Cuvée – a harmonious blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Gris from Finn Hill Vineyard

  • 2021 Pinot Noir Cuvée – showcasing fruit from both Finn Hill and Menefee Vineyards

POUR SOME LOVE: a blending event

POUR SOME LOVE — A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Our Flagship Pinot

Ever wonder how a wine goes from barrel to bottle — and what choices shape its final character? We think it’s one of the most fascinating parts of winemaking, and we’re inviting you to experience it with us at POUR SOME LOVE, our special Pinot Noir blending trial.

On Thursday, July 31st, from 6–9 PM at the winery bar, we’re opening up our cellar, our notebooks, and our palates for a hands-on look at how we craft our Love & Squalor Willamette Valley Pinot Noir — the wine that started it all for us.

So, what happens at a blending trial?

Each year, once all the separate Pinot Noir lots have been aging in barrel, our winemaker Matt (with plenty of help from Alana, our assistant winemaker and Jess Kate the tasting room wrangler) tastes through every single barrel, takes notes, argues with himself, and tries to figure out what the best possible version of that vintage should be. Should it be brighter? A little more savory? Should we add a splash from that tiny block on the hill? Which barrels stand out — and which should we hold for our single vineyard bottlings?

At POUR SOME LOVE, you’ll get to sit at the blending table with us. We’ll pour you samples of different Pinot Noir lots — all from the same 2024 vintage — and show you how small blending decisions make a big difference in the final wine. You’ll get to compare your trial blend with our current single vineyard Pinots and our other Pinot Noir tiers, tasting how site, barrel, and winemaker choices all come together in the bottle.

We’ll talk through our favorite vineyards, share what makes each one unique, and answer all the questions you might have about Oregon Pinot and the behind-the-scenes reality of blending wine.

What’s included?

  • Your ticket ($45 general public, $25 for our wine club members) gets you:

  • A seat at the blending trial with lots of Pinot to taste

  • A tasting of our other Pinot tiers & single vineyard wines

  • Time to chat directly with Matt, Alana, and Jess (our tasting room manager who knows our wines inside and out)

  • Light snacks to keep you steady

  • A little notebook to capture your tasting notes

  • A $5 coupon toward your future purchase of the 2024 Love & Squalor Pinot Noir once it’s bottled

  • 10% off any bottles you buy that night (or 20% if you’re a club member — a nice perk for our loyal folks!)

Why we love doing this

This is honestly one of our favorite things to share with our community. Blending isn’t fancy — it’s thoughtful, messy, delicious work that captures what we love most about making wine in the Willamette Valley: nuance, place, and that bit of chaos that keeps it interesting.

So if you’ve ever wondered how a wine like our flagship Pinot Noir comes to life, we’d love to have you at the table. Bring your curiosity (and maybe a friend), roll up your sleeves, and taste your way through the 2024 vintage with us.

Tickets are limited to just 20 people, so grab yours soon if you want in. We promise good wine, good company, and some good nerdy Pinot talk.

We can’t wait to pour some love with you this summer.

DEC 14th - Join Us for Spin the Bottle: GC WINES Edition!

On December 14, from 2-6 pm, join us as we welcome GC Wines as the guest winemaker for our next Spin the Bottle event. GC Wines founder John Grochau’s path to wine started in fine dining restaurants, namely Portland’s legendary Higgins. Since founding the winery in 2002, he has focused on making food-friendly wines reminiscent of the place the grapes were grown. John sources from vineyards in Oregon and Washington that have committed to sustainable, organic, and sensible farming, and he is well known in the Oregon wine industry as a friend, compatriot, and community builder.

At the event, John will be pouring five wines that showcase the breadth of GC Wines’ offerings:

2022 Melon de Bourgogne
2023 Threemile Vineyard Albarino
2023 Convivial Pinot Noir & Gamay Noir
2021 Carlton Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir
