Single Vineyard New Releases

For those of you who have been paying attention, know that I have never ever released a single vineyard bottling (with one obscure exception). Well, never say never. We are very proud to introduce our brand new Single Vineyard lineup.

2014 Wings of Desire Cuddihy Vineyard Field Blend
This bottling is sourced from the old experimental block at Richard Cuddihy’s eponymous Yamhill vineyard. A co-fermented blend of 8 different grape types all planted next to each other in 1971. This barrel-aged richer styled white is a testament to the hardscrabble early days of Oregon viticulture and to magical accidents. 60 cases produced $30

2014 Sunnyside Vineyard Riesling
This Riesling is a citrusy, apple-y, stone-y and herbal dry Riesling sourced from my favorite Willamette Valley site for the varietal. If you are already a fan of my Riesling, this should deepen your appreciation. If you’re not quite sure, then this is the one to win you over. 25 cases produced $48

2014 Temperance Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir
This wine is bolder than my usual Pinots, it nonetheless has a signature grace typical of this storied Eola-Amity vineyard. I have been fortunate to work with Temperance Hill Vineyard fruit since 2007. To cut your teeth on an Oregon “Grand Cru” is a great way to learn winemaking. There are so many respected winemakers who make amazing wines from Temperance, I guess it’s time to throw my hat into the ring. 25 cases $58.

Wine Enthusiast gave this wine 90pts read more here

2014 Sunny Mountain Vineyard Pinot Noir
Not to be confused with the Sunnyside Vineyard from above of course, I have been seeking fruit from this Southern Willamette site ever since my assistant winemaker days at Brooks. We had some in the fermentation hall there, and it was always my favorite to do punchdowns on. The exotic aromatics of spice and leather were and are seductive and the wine in barrel has power and grip like no other site I’ve had the pleasure to work with. 25 cases $58

These wines are very limited and may or may not ever be bottled again. So enjoy them while they are around. And to celebrate their release with us - enjoy them at a discount . . .

Spring Has Sprung

The warehouse is getting emptier and emptier. The blends in the cellar are getting closer to their bottling date. In the meantime there are plenty of opportunities to get out and taste some Love & Squalor. This Friday from 3-6pm I will be pouring at the brand new Zupan's store in Lake Grove. I look forward to surprising the crowds with the Fancy Pants Riesling and other treats.

Next month marks the 10-year anniversary of the original eastside wine spot - Noble Rot. The Rot has been my hang since they opened, long before I was a winemaker. They were the first place to put Love & Squalor on the list and the first to pour it in a flight. I got all sorts of warm fuzzies for them. The Rotten Girls plus Leather are putting together a bash that is open to the public. 11 wineries pouring, mouth-watering snacks, some live tunes. If it is even half as memorable as the first anniversary, well . . . I guess I'll remember some of it.

Hope to see you all out there this Spring.

The Newest Portland Urban Winery Tasting - TOMORROW!

Last minute impromptu get-together in a cavernous room that will someday house a winery. Jesse Skiles - Fausse Piste, Prop. - is opening up his new space in Industrial SE tomorrow and asked me to bring some wine. We'll be popping some corks, eating some cheese and talking smack. Also in attendance will be the-man-named-after-a-river, Ewald Moseler, pouring the wines he likes from Teutonic Wine Co. This will be a fun time and there will be some good wines open - many made in such small quantities that this may be your only chance to put them in your mouth. Summer of (Oregon)Riesling

I am happy that Paul Greico's obsession with all things Riesling has spread out from it's New York home and has become a national epidemic. Here in Oregon, nine restaurants are participating in the Summer of Riesling by pouring three Rieslings by the glass all summer long, with many others restaurants highlighting Riesling as well. The following are signed up:

Bar Avignon, Portland - featuring Love & Squalor

Clyde Common, Portland

Gruner, Portland

June, Portland

Le Pigeon, Portland

Heathman Restaurant and Bar, Portland - featuring Love & Squalor

Metrovino, Portland

Ned Ludd, Portland - featuring Love & Squalor

Olympic Provisions, Portland

Love & Squalor Riesling is showing up at these fine spots and is additionally ON TAP! at Kir and St. Jack. This is a special one barrel 2010 cuvee that I created for these guys. When it's gone, it's gone.

Winter's Hill Tasting Next Week

Hey There - Hope you can make it out to this tasting - Five Wineries/One Vineyard - only 45 minutes from Portland.

Cheers -

Matt

The Terroir of Winter's Hill expressed by 5 Winemakers June 26 11-5pm Winter’s Hill Vineyard 6451 NE Hilltop Lane, Dayton OR 97114 Taste wines made by 5 different winemakers using grapes grown in Winter’s Hill Vineyard. $10 tasting fee.

In addition to making estate wines from their vineyard in the Dundee Hills, Winter's Hill Vineyard sells grapes to other wineries in the region. For the first time, we are bringing those wines and winemakers together for a public tasting. Compare and enjoy the similarities and differences between the wines while nibbling on food pairings selected by the winemakers to accompany their wines.

Anne Amie Vineyards makes one of the few single vineyard designated Pinot Gris wines in Oregon, using fruit from Winter’s Hill Vineyard. Winemaker Thomas Houseman worked with Winter’s Hill fruit at a previous winery, and since coming to Anne Amie he has put his own stamp on the wine.

Matello owner and winemaker Marcus Goodfellow has worked with Winter’s Hill fruit for more than 10 years. That kind of long-term working relationship has tremendous value to both the vineyard and winery, as both can learn from each other as they work to improve the quality of the wine.

Cottonwood Winery is a boutique winery making wines from several of Oregon’s best vineyards. Winemaker Aaron Lieberman and Russell Gladhart of Winter’s Hill worked together at Amity Vineyards in the mid 90’s and have remained friends ever since. It is a pleasure to work together again.

Love and Squalor Wines are made by proprietor Matt Berson. As an assistant winemaker at several well known Oregon wineries he made wine from vineyards across the Willamette Valley. That knowledge serves him today as he blends Pinot Noir for his own label.

Winemaker Delphine Gladhart of Winter’s Hill works almost exclusively with fruit from Winter’s Hill Vineyard. She is looking forward to tasting the wines that other people have crafted using the same building blocks.

Special 5-pack savings! All five winemakers have selected one of their wines for inclusion in a special five bottle pack at 15% off.

If you've never checked out this spot, this is a nice opportunity. It's a beautiful room on a quiet stretch of the Willamette.
