PINK PARTY FUNDRAISER 4/13 SATURDAY

STAND UP FOR REPRODUCTIVE
HEALTHCARE RIGHTS WITH US!
SAT 4/13 from 1 - 7pm

In 2022, following the momentous Supreme Court ruling striking down Roe vs. Wade, we kicked off this event to stand up for reproductive healthcare rights. While we are grateful Oregon has strong protections, other states do not. Both Angie and Jess have roots in Texas so it's a natural fit to help women who do not have the same protections we do.

50% of all profits from tastings and bottle sales for the day will be donated to Planned Parenthood, America's most trusted provider of sexual and reproductive health care.

The wine lineup will be:

  • 2022 Pet Matt Sparkling Rosé

  • 2023 Garageland Rosé of Pinot Noir

  • 2023 Garageland Rosé of Gamay Noir (on tap)

  • 2022 Love & Squalor Skin Contact Pinot Gris "Walks on Gilded Splinters"

In addition to this fabulous wine flight, the final few bottles of the 2022 Love & Squalor Skin Contact Gewürztraminer "A Frayed Knot" will be available for purchase. We're nearly out of stock and gearing up for our next bottling, so snag the final few bottles at our tasting room before they're gone!

Hearth & Soul Pizza truck will be onsite, serving up delicious pizzas so come hungry and enjoy their tasty offerings available for purchase! Check 'em out on insta: @hearthandsoulpizza.

$20/person tasting fee. 50% of all profits from tastings and bottle sales go to Planned Parenthood. Wine Club savings apply!

NEW RELEASE:A FRAYED KNOT

Sometimes the best things come as a result of an accident. When your hand is forced in an unfamiliar direction, you can discover paths and solutions you never knew you liked. That is how this wine came to be. I first made it by sort of mistake in 2013 when a vineyard owner gifted us a half ton of Gewurztraminer - we have been refining the accidents that made this wine special ever since. Sometimes a knot that frayed is still the best (and least afraid) answer to a complicated question.

The 2021 "A Frayed Knot" Rosé of Gewürztraminer gets its orangey color, and savory characteristics, from the skins. Unlike our Rosé of Pinot Noir which goes directly from the vineyard into the press, these Alsatian-style grapes spend up to two weeks cold soaking in their own juice, imparting a rosy color and some light texture. Then the whole lot goes into the press and undergoes a gentle fermentation in old barrels. The resulting wine is a dry mouthful of delicious tropical and stone fruits with a bit of spice and a wink of bitters. It's a truly unique bottling and always goes quickly.

Only 75 cases were produced, so if you want more later, well, I'm afraid not.

GARAGELAND ROSÉ OF PINOT NOIR 2021

For those of you who have been following along, you know that Garageland is the cousin of our Love & Squalor line of fine wines. It is named in homage to all of the crafters and makers who toil over their passions behind non-descript roll-up doors in warehouse districts around the globe. Just like we do here at Portland Wine Company.

Garageland expanded into the world of rosé with this pale pink wine crafted from two youthful vineyard sites in the Willamette Valley. The Pinot noir was direct-pressed – tossed stem-and-all into our grape press – and gently squeezed. It was then fermented in tank to retain purity of fruit flavors and the crispness we all want from our summer quaffer. This year we’ve added a screw cap closure for convenience when you are at the beach or on the mountain.

Like all of our bottlings, this is a limited-production wine. We should have enough to get through the summer, but it will be fleeting. We will be offering it on tap from the cask at the tasting room. If you like pink wines as much as we do, keep your eyes open for forthcoming emails about our next vintage of “A Frayed Knot” Rosé of Gewürztraminer, the pink Rumble Can, and the top-secret grape varietal in the next Pet Matt Rosé.

Sparkling RosE Pet Matt Release

petmatt_sparkling_rose.jpg

Do you know what pairs well with
Back-to-school
Indian summer
Leaving your bike out in the rain
Fried green tomatoes
The fading of your sandal tan
String lights on the patio?

The answer of course is “bubbles!” No matter what the question.

Last year was the first release of our Pet Matt pétillant naturel. You probably missed it because it was gone in a flash. Same thing is going to happen this time, so you are fairly warned. We made 50 cases of the pink sparkling Pinot. Most of it is marked for the 'Friends With Benefits' wine club, but we have held some for website and walk-up customers. 3-bottle limit.

Outdoor seating is still going strong at the Portland Wine Company tasting room. And we are now welcoming vaccinated drinkers inside. We have family friendly snacks and feature a rotating lager beer on tap - this month it’s the Pilsner from our friends at Heater-Allen Brewing. Our latest Mothershucker white blend is also getting the tap treatment and you can sample the last of the 2013 Antsy Pants on our wine flights. Hope to see you soon. Our hours are still Th/Fri 4-8pm; Sat/Sun 1-7pm

OUR NEW RELEASES

IMG_1755.jpg

We’ve just released a few new vintages to the website. One of the many advantages to being a wine club member is your access to our Library Wines and Early Releases.

Our library is dwindling, so Wine Club members can stock up by emailing what older vintages they would like: that’s 13 vintages!

Here is a list of the new wines just released:

2017 Gamay Noir Willamette Valley

2018 Sauvignon Blanc Willamette Valley

2018 Rosé of Gewurztraminer ‘A Frayed Knot’

2013 Pinot Noir Reserve ‘Antsy Pants’

2015 Riesling Sunnyside Vineyard

Fancy Pants!

Fancy Pinot

Why, thank you. They are for special occasions only. I'm not allowed to wear them to school. The new Love & Squalor wines were named after a favorite pair of madras trousers that I had as a kid. The first ever Love & Squalor 'reserve' wines are now available to our most devoted followers. Two wines were bottled; a primarily native yeast selection of dry (very dry) Riesling and a 1.5 barrel selection of the richer Pinots in the cellar. Both are very limited releases - 60 cases and 30 cases were bottled.

The wines are featured at select restaurants in Seattle and Portland - RN74, Marche Seattle, Wild Ginger, Wildwood and Metrovino. Look for them there or order them direct through me. Prices and tasting notes are up on the 'wines' and 'order' pages of this site. Go ahead and try on your Fancy Pants this weekend.

Off The Leash

The new releases are going gangbusters in the Portland area. New Releases: Get Them Here First!

I am very pleased to announce the pre-release offering of the new Love & Squalor wines. You can order them via eMail at buywine@loveandsqualorwine.com. I will be pouring these beauties this coming Memorial Day weekend at Brooks Winery in Amity (just south of McMinnville). Please come and say hello between sips.

The 2009 Eola Hills Riesling is drinking great, even in its youth. It is a bit drier than previous vintages but still shows forward apple and citrus fruits, a tropicality in the mid-palate and  a long wet finish. $18/bottle.

2008 was a banner year for Oregon Pinot, and the Love & Squalor 2008 Pinot noir bottling is surely taking part in that parade. Floral and forest notes lead into a dark and rich beginning. The middle spreads wide across the tongue, coating with cherry, black tea and finishes with bright complexity. This is my finest effort yet and I hope you will agree. $24/bottle.

As always, I will extend a 10% discount on orders of 6 or more bottles. I also have a bargain four-pack  - 2 Riesling + 2 Pinot for only $80 + shipping. Or try the six-pack deal - 3 Riesling + 3 Pinot for only $110 + shipping. Please see last year's order form on this blog for more clarification. 2009/2010 L&S Order Form

Thank you for your continued enjoyment of Love & Squalor. May we have the opportunity to toast together soon.

Cheers-

Matt
